The thought that starts when the lights go off

For most people who come here the problem is not sleep exactly. It is that the day finally goes quiet and the thinking gets louder.

You might recognise some of this

  • The same thought going round, unwanted, arriving the moment the room is quiet.
  • Fine all day in company, and restless the moment you are alone with it.
  • Too wound up to slow down, still going over the day at midnight.
  • A vague night-time dread with nothing you can point at.
  • Replaying something that already happened, at length, again.
  • Tension that will not leave the body even once you are lying down.

What this can and cannot offer

This is not a sleep treatment and the essences are not a sedative. They will not make you drowsy, which for some people is the appeal and for others is the disappointment.

Bach classified White Chestnut for exactly this: a thought you did not choose, repeating, that gets louder in the quiet. Whether an essence changes that is a question the evidence does not settle in its favour. What the hour reliably does is separate the loop itself from the tension underneath it and from the dread that has no object, which are three different things people describe with one word.

If your sleep problem is a sleep problem rather than a thinking problem, sleep hygiene and a doctor will do more than I can, and I will tell you so.

Essences Bach classified for these states

A selection is personal, so this is not a list to work through yourself. It is here so you can see the distinctions the system actually makes, which are finer than the single word most of us use.

  • White Chestnut

    Insufficient interest in present circumstances

The same thought going round, unwanted, loudest when the room goes quiet.

  • Vervain

Over-care for the welfare of others

Wound tight, running on conviction, physically unable to slow down.

  • Agrimony

    Oversensitivity to influences and ideas

Cheerful company all day, and then alone with the worry you kept off your face.

  • Aspen

    Fear

Apprehension with nothing attached to it. A sense that something is coming, with no name for it.

  • Honeysuckle

    Insufficient interest in present circumstances

Living in what already happened, replaying it instead of being here.

  • Impatiens

    Loneliness

Everything and everyone moving too slowly, and the irritation that comes with it.
